What is a Vehicle Safety System Inspection?
The Vehicle Safety System Inspection, formerly known as the Brake and Lamp Inspection, is required by the DMV to ensure that a salvage or rebuilt vehicle is safe to drive.
Who needs a Vehicle Safety System Inspection?
Anyone registering a salvage, revived salvage, or total loss vehicle must complete this inspection before the DMV can issue a new title and registration.
What does the inspection include?
The technician checks all major safety components, including brakes, lights, seat belts, wipers, horn, mirrors, and tires, to make sure they meet California’s safety standards.
How long does the inspection take?
Most inspections take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the vehicle’s condition and whether any repairs are needed before approval.
What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?
If your vehicle doesn’t pass, the inspector will provide a detailed report showing what needs to be fixed.
What certificate do I get after passing the inspection?
You’ll receive an official Vehicle Safety System Certificate from a licensed inspection station.
